Princess Mira’s favorite coat had one empty buttonhole. The missing button was shaped like a daisy.
Mira checked the path where she had walked that morning. Her mother came too, carrying a small basket for anything they found.
Beside the fountain, Mira saw something round. It was a pebble. Under the bench, she saw something bright. It was a sweet wrapper, which her mother picked up.
Then they heard a sneeze.
The gardener stood by the greenhouse with his coat hanging open. One button was missing from it too.
‘I have spare buttons,’ said Mira. ‘But none shaped like daisies.’
‘Mine needn’t be a daisy,’ the gardener said. ‘Just something to keep the wind out.’
They went inside. Mira opened her sewing tin while her mother fetched a needle. There were blue buttons, wooden buttons, and one very large red button.
The gardener chose a plain brown one. Mira chose two small yellow ones for her own coat. Her mother sewed one beside the empty buttonhole so the coat could close. She sewed the other next to it, just for decoration.
‘They look like sunshine,’ Mira said.
Later, the gardener brought them a tiny pot of daisies. Tucked beside a root was the missing button.
‘Found it in the soil,’ he said.
Mira put the daisy button safely in her tin. She kept the two yellow ones on her coat.
Whenever she wore it, she remembered that a missing thing could be found later—and a chilly friend could be helped now.
