After the rain, Una Unicorn found a puddle beside the gate. It held a little piece of rainbow.
She hurried to fetch Rabbit.
‘A rainbow on the ground!’ she said.
Rabbit brought a jar. ‘We could keep it.’
He dipped the jar into the puddle. Inside was plain water. The rainbow stayed where it was.
Una moved her head. The colors changed. Rabbit moved too. From his side of the puddle, he saw only a bright bit of sky.
‘Stand beside me,’ Una said.
Now they both saw the colors.
Rabbit put his empty jar down. ‘Perhaps this is a rainbow for looking at.’
They sat very still. A sparrow landed on the gate. Una moved over so Rabbit could see around her horn.
Slowly, the light changed and the rainbow faded.
Rabbit touched the jar. ‘We can’t take the rainbow home.’
Una thought about the colors, the quiet gate, and Rabbit sitting close.
‘We could draw what we remember.’
They went to her kitchen. Rabbit drew a blue puddle. Una drew a yellow gate. Between them they made a rainbow with all the crayons they could find.
The colors were not quite like the puddle’s. Their rainbow was much bigger.
Una put the drawing on the wall. Rabbit put his jar beneath it with one small flower inside.
They had found two different ways to bring a lovely afternoon home.
